It is with great sadness, that we the family announce the passing of Harold Joseph ‘Chip’ McDonald on the 4th floor at the Glace Bay Hospital, Feb. 12, 2015. Dad passed away peacefully in the arms of his family.
Born in Reserve Mines, March 25, 1927, to the late Edward John and Mary Josephine (Ley) McDonald of Port Morien.
Harold worked as a coal miner for 38 plus years for the Dominion Coal Company and then Devco. He was a member of St. Joseph’s parish in Reserve Mines and a Carmelite. Dad was a fiddle player for which he earned the nick name, "Chip off the old block," as his dad was also a musician. He was so loved by all whom he met. Dad drew his strength from his faith and conviction to family, especially his grandchildren whom he dearly adored. He will be missed.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary Josephine Jaques (nee McDonald) and his son, Ed McDonald; grandchildren, Gerard McDonald, Bradley McDonald and Megan Jaques.
Harold was predeceased by his wife, Angeline Julia McDonald (2009), his parents, sisters, Margaret (Gallant), Annie, Frances and brothers, Edward, Michael and (Red) George McDonald.
A special thanks to the staff on the 4th floor of the Glace Bay Hospital, he especially enjoyed chatting with the dietary and housekeeping staff, whom he dearly cherished. Thank You. A special thank you to the ER staff at the Glace Bay Hospital for their compassion in Dad’s last hours.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 19, 2015, from 7-9 p.m.. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Church in Reserve Mines, Friday, Feb. 20, 2015, at 11 a.m. with Fr. Danny Boudreau officiating. Burial will take place at a later date.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
