It is with heavy hearts and great sadness we announce the passing of our dear father, grandfather, brother and friend, Louis Russell McIntyre passed away suddenly on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015, at the Northside General Hospital with his family by his side.
Louis was born in Florence and was raised mostly in Georges River, the son of the late Samuel and Angelina (Hosking) McIntyre.
Louis was a very talented musician and began playing the fiddle at a very young age. He and his mother, who also played the fiddle shared many sessions. He enjoyed numerous music sessions with some of his closest friends, brother-in-law Danny Finney, Rev. Joe Gillis, Dougie MacPhee, Dwayne Cote, Bernie Degaust and recently his cousin Cecie Capstick. Earlier in his music career Louis was a good friend of the late Winston Fitzgerald and played many times with him all over Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island. He also enjoyed playing with other well known musicians such as Lee Cremo.
Louis was employed at a number of jobs over the course of his life, including stevedore at Marine Atlantic. Louis’s memory will live on through his music and the many lives he touched throughout his life.
Louis is survived by his children, four sons Richard, Blair, Paul and Stephen McIntyre; two daughters JoAnn and Sheila McIntyre; his seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Sammy and Tom McIntyre; his sisters, Margaret Almon, Angeline Johnston, Anne Almon and Bernadette (Danny) Finney, all of Georges River and many loving nieces and nephews.
Louis will be sadly missed by his loving special friend of 30 years, Thelma Scott and family.
He was predeceased by his sister Mary Almon, brothers, Harry and Elmer McIntyre, grandson Patrick Nicholson, sisters-in-law, Jean and Bernice, brothers-in-law, Frank, Bill, Louis and Chalmers.
A private family visitation will be held. Funeral mass for Louis will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or with Rev. Peter McLeod officiating.
Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or a charity of choice.
