Jean passed away in Nyanza peacefully surrounded by loving family.
Jean was the daughter of the late Alexander and Annie Jane Grant, Middle River.
Jean was predeceased by three siblings, Duncan Grant, Middle River, Charlotte (E. Gordon) Mac Iver, Nyanza and Olive (Billy) MacKay of Big Baddeck.
Special cousins who survive her are Virginia Fraser of Middle River, Doctor Barbara Corbett, Ontario and Robert Corbett, British Columbia.
Jean is survived by loving nephews and nieces, Gordie & Linda MacIver, Nyanza, N.S., Grant & Chrissie (Joey, Bobbie and Lloyd) MacKay, Fox Creek, Alta., Ruth & Mike (Allison, Michelle, Erin, Sarah, Brendan) Coady, Wembley, Alta., Heather & Gary (Bonnie Jean, Mike and Cody) Gomuwka, Little Smokey, Alta., Kathy & John (Rick and Kim Kutchinski) Kennedy, Grand Prairie, Alta., and was predeceased by her nephew, Sandy, who is survived by Debbie (Matthew, Gregory and Justin) MacKay, Big Baddeck, N.S. Jean is also survived by many third generation nieces and nephews as well.
She was proud of each generation and was like a mother to them all. Her love and kindness was strengthened by her strong faith and kinship.
Jean was an educator for over 46 years. Her teaching career began at the Forks School in Big Baddeck and Baddeck Academy. She moved from local schools to Central School in North Sydney and then to Thompson Junior and Senior High where she taught science and also worked for the most part of her career as vice principal, that becoming her full time position until her retirement. Jean held a passion for ensuring her charges exceeded their potential. She was a gifted educator.
Jean was the organist for Farquharson Presbyterian Church, Middle River for over 20 years. She was an Elder of that church and also a Representative Elder for that church in the Presbytery for Cape Breton. Jean was a charter member of Eastern Star, Victoria Chapter # 19.
Jean was a strong supporter and active member in many community groups, and worked hard at any and everything she touched her hand to. Her first and foremost devotion was to her parents, siblings and their children. Jean was a long standing member of the Progressive Conservative Party both of Nova Scotia and the Federal Party of Canada as well.
We want to extend a thank you to Dr. C. Chow and Dr. R. Genge of Baddeck, Dr. J. Kirkpatrick, North Sydney. Our gratitude is endless for the help from home care and also the guidance received from Mary and Dr. Ritter. This task would never have been accomplished were it not for the kind and caring support of family and neighbours who selflessly aided us when we needed them, in Baddeck and North Sydney as well.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Middle River Cemetery fund or Farquharson Memorial Presbyterian Church, Middle River.
The wake will be held in MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck on Friday Feb. 20, 7-9 p.m., Saturday 2-4 p.m. and Eastern Star Service is at 6:50 p.m., wake continues at 7-9 p.m., Feb. 21. Funeral service will be held in Middle River Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m., Reverend Loius Ihasz officiating. Burial will be at the Middle River Cemetery.
