Dorothy Cook

COOK, DOROTHY F.
With her loving family at her side, Dorothy passed away on Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at Turnbull Nursing Home after a period of declining health.
Born in London, England on September 19, 1921, where she grew up and was educated, she was the daughter of Sydney George Tatnall and Rosina Dorothy (Mann) Tatnall.
Dorothy took dressmaking at the Shoreditch Technical Institute while in her teens, but having trained and worked as a bookkeeper with English Clock Systems and JW Simpson Ltd., was assigned to serve in a clerical capacity during the Second World War in the ATS (Auxiliary Territorial Service), which was the women’s branch of the British army. She married her childhood sweetheart, Stephen Cook, in 1946 after her release from the army and his discharge from the RAF after six years of service.
Dorothy, Steve and their infant daughter Penny immigrated to Canada and settled in Saint John in 1952. As it turned out, Dorothy’s training and service as a bookkeeper before, during and after the war stood her in good stead when Steve, a chartered accountant, opened his own practice in 1965 because she worked with him for the next 40 years until she retired in 2005. Dorothy always enjoyed welcoming Steve’s clients with a friendly smile and a chat whenever they visited the office.
Ever a seamstress, she also enjoyed knitting, needlepoint and cross-stitch; these works will always be treasured by her family. Dorothy was a member of the Church of Good Shepherd for many years, as well as IODE and bridge clubs, and had been a social member of Westfield Golf & Country Club. She thoroughly enjoyed family dinners and parties.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter Penny Burgess (Greg), her son Chris Cook (Fran), her five grandchildren, Stephanie Seheult (Peter), Jeffrey Burgess, Nick Cook (Angelica Ruiz), Andrew Burgess and Patrick Cook and her great-grandchild Julianne Seheult. She is also survived by her relatives in England, including sisters-in-law Sue Cook, nieces Suzanne, Frances and Caroline and their husbands and children.
Dorothy was predeceased in 2010 by her husband of 64 years, Stephen Cook, her brother Dennis Tatnall and his wife Kay Tatnall.
At the family’s request, there will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). Dorothy will be remembered by her family at a private gathering to be held at a later date.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of Turnbull Nursing Home. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice of Greater Saint John, Turnbull Nursing Home, United Way of Greater Saint John or a charity of donor’s choice will be appreciated by the family.
