It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Gerald William Oakley, on Feb. 20, 2015, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, with family at his side.
Gerald was born in Sydney, the son of the late James and Jemima Oakley.
Gerald was a bricklayer by trade, and worked for over 40 years at the Sydney Steel Corp in the blast furnace and open-hearth department. He served as a peacekeeper in Korea for one year.
Gerald was a kind and generous man who loved his family dearly, especially “his girls” and grandchildren. Gerald is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Elizabeth 'Bessie' Bearnes Oakley; six daughters, Mary, Musquodaboit Harbour, Geraldine (Gerri), Sydney, Lisa Danttouze, Sydney, Elizabeth (Libby), Winnipeg, Patricia (Patti), Fredericton, and Barbara McCarthy (Daniel McCarthy), Fredericton; and six grandchildren, Timothy Danttouze, Alicia Danttouze (Remo Tell), Lucas Danttouze, Liam Oakley, James McCarthy and Alexander McCarthy. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including special nephew Tony MacPhee, Ottawa.
Gerald was predeceased by his parents, sister Ellen (Francis), brothers, Bob (Marg),Howard (Florence) and Karl. He is survived by two sisters, Clara Pace (Roy), Laurel (Frank Buckingham); brothers, Walter (Jean), and Murray.
Dad always said “never say goodbye, say see you later.” So see you later, da, pops, gramps, and grandpa.
Visitation will be held Tuesday at 12 p.m. followed by funeral service at 2 p.m. in the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home with Fr. Patrick O’Neill officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the charity of one’s choice.
