We her family, regret to announce the passing of Miss Mary Florence MacDonald. Mary passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2015, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, with her loving family by her side.
Born in Glace Bay, July 14, 1918, she was the daughter of the late William and Margaret (Morrison) MacDonald. Mary was a longtime resident of Gardiner Mines and while living there, she was a faithful member of St. James Church. She also lived in the Reeves Street Seniors Complex, Sydney, for 25 years; MacGillivray Guest Home for 14 years and was then transferred to Harbourstone Enhanced Care, where she resided for the past nine years.
In her earlier years, Mary was employed as a housekeeper for several priests, at various parishes throughout our local Dioceses. She loved playing card games, especially 45s, tarabish, bridge and cribbage. She enjoyed sewing and she had a great love for animals. Mary was very kindhearted and a lady of great faith; making many pilgrimages to the Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré Shrine. She also looked forward to a cup of tea with a boston-cream donut. She was a delight to all who knew her.
Mary is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, but she will be dearly missed by nieces, Dolores, Peggy, Margaret–Ann and nephews, Danny and Joe.
Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by brothers, Walter (Alice), Angus (Lucy) and Danny; a nephew, Johnny and a niece, Mary Lou.
In honouring Mary’s request, there will be no visitation.
A funeral mass celebrating her life will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015 at Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport, with Fr. Daniel Boudreau officiating. Interment will be at a later date in the St. James Parish Cemetery, Gardiner Mines.
Arrangements are under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
Memorial donations in Mary’s memory may be made to the SPCA.
At this time we would like to thank the Palliative Care Unit, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and the entire staff at Harbourstone’s Miners Lane and Irish Cove, for the compassionate care shown to our Aunt Mary.
