Dr. Maurice Kari Oleson

Dr. Maurice Kari Oleson

The family is deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved brother and uncle, Dr. Maurice Oleson, formerly of the Mathematics Department of Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN). He left us, with the tears and prayers of family at his bedside. He was born in 1940 in the farming and fishing community of Riverton, Manitoba as the cherished son of Emily and Kari Oleson (now deceased). He is survived by his five siblings: sister Trygvine (Jim-deceased); brothers Kristjan (JoAnn), Dennis (Nukte), Brian (Joanne), Fred and numerous nieces and nephews. Maurice grew up as a brilliant student in the small town of Riverton and later excelled in the outside academic world of Applied Mathematics. He served as an important university role model for his siblings. Maurice earned a B.Sc Honours from the University of Manitoba (1963) and a PhD in Relativity from the University of Waterloo (1972). He joined MUN in 1972 and officially retired in 2006 following 4 years of long term disability. During his cherished academic career at MUN, he was highly regarded for his devotion to teaching and his love of mathematics. He was a passionate mentor to students, coaching their skills in writing as well as in mathematics. In particular, his sense of humour was a treasure to all, often using his exceptional writing skills to highlight humourous life incidents in a manner that can only be described as "elegant". Maurice had many special interests besides mathematics. They included a special love for traditional music, carpentry, playing pool, his Icelandic heritage and language; and, of course, his beloved cat Tiny. Maurice's siblings would like to thank those many people who were important to him. There were many, and we give thanks to you all. Among those to whom we would like to give special thanks include his dear friends from the MUN Mathematics Department such as Clayton Halfyard, devoted niece Wendy Peppel, his close personal friend and often spiritual mentor Don Rideout, close friends musician Gordon (Patti) Quinton, John Lacey and his former colleague and dear friend Patrick McCarthy in Ireland. The family extends our appreciation to all those dedicated caregivers who provided kindness and care to Maurice over the years. This includes staff at the Miller Centre, Care Givers (home care) and Chancellor Park. A special thanks to the many caring nurses and staff associated with 3rd Floor West Wing at Chancellor Park. Funeral will take place in Manitoba and details will be announced shortly. A memorial service will be held at a later date in St. John's to celebrate his life and achievements. Arrangements are in progress and will be announced in the near future.

Goda Nott Elsku Maurice.
Blessud Se Minning Hans.
(Icelandic: Good Night Dear Maurice. Blessed Be Your Memory).
