Mildred "Jean" Sewell

SEWELL, MILDRED "JEAN"
May 26, 1923 – February 25, 2015
Mildred “Jean” Sewell passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 25, 2015 at the Dr Everett Chalmers Hospital after a brief illness. Born on May 26, 1923 in Lower Caraquet, NB, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Annie Laurie (Harper) Sewell, and the third of eight children.
She is survived by her sister, Grace (Sewell) Donald; nephews Brian and Ian (Brigitte); great niece Leigh, and niece, Cathy (Halifax). Jean will also be missed by cousins and friends.
In addition to her parents, Jean is predeceased by her brothers Herbert, Percival, Edmund, Albert, John and sister, Thelma.
She was a loving and supportive person with a strong work ethic. After completing high school in Caraquet, NB, she joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942, following in the footsteps of her two older brothers. Jean was posted to Ottawa working in Air Chief Marshall Breadner’s office. Her proficiency in French and English, both written and spoken, was a huge asset. She achieved her designation of Certified General Accountant after WWII and began working for National Sea, an international fish company, in Shippegan, NB. In 1972, she moved to Fredericton and worked for Mactaquac Provincial Park as the head accountant and would do so until her retirement in the late 1988.
Throughout her life she enjoyed knitting, playing bridge, attending the Fredericton horse races, watching sports and doting on her nephews and niece.
Jean would consider herself more of a sports fan than an athlete. She enjoyed watching her nephews and niece in their sporting events as children and more recently watching her great niece play soccer. She regularly watched her sister Grace in her weekly curling games and even kept statistics on the game. Jean often travelled with her sister, Grace, to watch her compete in various golf and curling events. Jean was also a dedicated fan of professional hockey and baseball but only if Canadian teams were playing. She even travelled to Toronto in her 80s to watch Matt Stairs and the Blue Jays play. Golf and curling were also passionately watched on television.
Jean became an avid golfer once she retired and made new friends through this pastime. With the benefit of a cover on her golf cart, she would play until the golf course was closed for the season logging more rounds per season than her other family members. Jean would eventually have to give up the game due to a decline in her vision. Despite this decline in vision and hearing her mind remained sharp. She was delighted by the surprise 90th birthday party thrown for her 2 years ago.
She was a member of the Eastern Star, St Paul’s United Church of Canada and former member of the Fredericton Golf Club.
The family has requested no visitation. A funeral service will be held in the J.A. McAdam Memorial Chapel on Sunday, March 8, 2015 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Ellen Beairsto officiating. A reception will follow in the adjoining room. Interment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the ALS Society or a charity of the donor’s choice.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to McAdam’s Funeral Home. www.mcadamsfh.com 458-9170
