George McIntyre

McINTYRE, GEORGE A., B.A., M.A., C.Ed., F.C.C.T.
It is with profound sadness that the family of George A. McIntyre announce his passing on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 in his 97th year. Born in Codys, Queen’s County, New Brunswick, he was the son of the late Margaret A. (Hetherington) and Henry H. McIntyre.
George attended Waterville School in Codys, as well as Beaconsfield and Alexandra schools in Saint John. He was a proud graduate of Saint John High School (S.J.H.S.), Provincial Normal School (P.N.S.), Mount Allison University (Mt.A.), Columbia University, New York and University of London, England.
George taught in New Jerusalem, Queen’s County, Ketepec, Saint John County, and at S.J.H.S. before attending Mt.A., where he also served as Assistant Dean of Men, was elected Class President and Valedictorian and taught part time at Mt.A’s Academy.
While a student of Educational Administration at Columbia Teachers College, George appreciated the invaluable experience of residence life at International House as well as his Observer Status at the General Assembly and Security Council of the United Nations. A Dean’s Scholar, he was elected Phi Delta Kappa and Class Marshall for over 2000 graduates.
George became Principal of St. Stephen High School (S.S.H.S.), Charlotte County, following a one year teaching and supervising principalship at Tobique Valley High School (T.V.H.S.). While at S.S.H.S., he received the prestigious Lord Beaverbrook Scholarship in Teaching – a year’s leave for study and travel, visiting schools throughout the British Isles. He later became Superintendent of Schools for Charlotte County and the Fundy Isles, the counties of Albert, Westmorland, including Moncton city and part of Kent County, and then School Region D. George served as Executive Officer, Atlantic Provinces Special Education Authority (A.P.S.E.A.), was founder and manager of Educational Associates and was a part time lecturer at the universities of Moncton, Mount Allison and New Brunswick.
Throughout his life, George was an active volunteer in numerous organizations – Kiwanis, New Brunswick Museum, New Brunswick Youth Orchestra, Red Cross, St. Stephen Musical Festivals and UNICEF, to name a few. George served the congregation of the former Lower Coverdale United Church for nearly fifty years, as well as the United Church of Canada Presbytery and Conference. He also gave more than a decade of service to the United Church Home for Senior Citizens – Drew Nursing Home Tantramar Residences. George was elected Regional Councillor, National President and Fellow (F.C.C.T.) of The Canadian College of Teachers (C.C.T.). He also served on the Board of Regents for Mount Allison and was an Honorary Life Member of the university’s Federated Alumni.
George is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, Bertella (Raworth) McIntyre and their daughter, Sharon; sister-in-law, Roberta Power (Gerard), Caissie Cape and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, George was predeceased by sisters, Sibyl Muir and Kathryn McNair and nephew, Robert Power.
George will be greatly missed by many colleagues and friends, long time boyhood friend, Faulds Spinney, Saskatoon and recent family feline companion, whom George named “Myste”.
At George’s request, there are no visitation hours. A Celebration of Life Service for George will be held at Fergusons Funeral Home Chapel, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995) on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 1:00 pm. Reception to follow.
In George’s memory, donations to the Friends of The Moncton Hospital (5200 Unit) or a memorial of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
