Little Harbour - Anna F. “Babe” Russell. It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Anna Fern “Babe” (MacKay) Russell.
Babe passed away March 7, 2015 at The Mira Nursing Home, Truro.
Born in the Aberdeen Hospital, November 25, 1934, she was a daughter of the late George and Emma (MacKenzie) MacKay. She was raised in Pictou Landing and spent her married life in Little Harbour.
Babe is survived by a son, Kevin (Jo-Anne); granddaughter, Kaitlin; brother, Doug MacKay; sisters: Kay (Bert) Gordon; Dorothy (Foster) Jenkins; many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Babe was predeceased by her loving husband of 54 years, Robert “Bob” Russell; sister, Shirley (Sheldon) Campbell; brothers and sisters-in-law: Grace MacKay; Molly and Seymour Colquhoun.
Babe graduated from New Glasgow High School in 1953 and the V.G. School of Nursing in 1956. She had extended studies in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in Psychiatry. Babe worked in the Emergency Department at the Aberdeen Hospital for many years before finishing her career as Director of Nursing at Valley View Villa.
She was a dedicated member of the Pictou County Palliative Care Society, Little Harbour Fire Auxiliary, a volunteer at the Little Harbour Community Centre and Ladies Aid and member of Lady Doric, Order of the Eastern Star.
She enjoyed cooking, baking, skating, swimming, shopping and baseball. She answered many calls as the “community nurse”.
The family would like to extend a sincere thanks to the Mira Staff and VON Homecare. Your special care was very much appreciated.
Visitation today, Monday, March 9, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow. The Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, in the Little Harbour Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Lorne MacLeod officiating. Family flowers only please.
