HALIFAX / PICTOU COUNTY – It is with deep regret that the family of Doris Jean Benson Thomas (nee Covey) announce her passing on Thursday, 5 March, 2015, the day before her 86th birthday, in Ivey’s Terrace Nursing Home, Trenton, NS.
Born in Halifax, NS, on 6 March, 1929, to Fred and Gertrude Covey, Jean married William Gwynn Thomas of Fishguard, Wales on 24 April, 1954.
Jean attended Queen Elizabeth High School in Halifax, followed by a year of nurses’ training in the Children’s Hospital, Halifax. After her nurse’s training, Jean was employed by the Canadian Red Cross Blood Donors Mobile Clinic and travelled extensively throughout Nova Scotia. Next she worked as a medical secretary with Drs. Ernie Johnson, Grant and Auld at their offices near the Armdale Rotary in Halifax, then at Sears in Halifax and following this she volunteered for several years in the records department of the QEII Hospital. During their time in Halifax, Jean and Bill were members of the St. John’s Anglican Church. Jean lived in Halifax most of her life until moving to New Glasgow following the death of Bill in 2004. She was a resident of the Shiretown Nursing Home for a while and then was moved to Ivey’s Terrace Nursing Home when it opened in 2012. Jean and Bill loved the outdoors and camped for several years at the Greenwood Air Force Base camping site and when this closed, they continued their summers camping at a site near Truro for many years.
Jean’s parents were Fred Covey, Halifax and Gertrude Covey (Benson), of Pictou. Grandparents were Percy Ellsworth Covey, Halifax and Lena Josephine Covey (Judge), Halifax, and William Benson, Sr., Pictou and Lilla May Benson (Joudrey), River John.
Jean is survived by her sister, Jackie Tobin (Bruce), New Glasgow; niece, Kelly Tobin, Stellarton; nephews: Chris Tobin (Denise), River Road, Eureka; Michael Tobin (Sheila), Pictou; Darren Tobin (Terri), London, Ont.; four grand-nephews, two grand-nieces, one great-grand-niece, five great-grand-nephews and two sisters-in-law, Ena Thomas in Fishguard, Wales and Rose-Marie Barrett in Llanelli, Carms, Wales.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held late in July 2015, in Seaview Cemetery, Pictou.
Arrangements are under the direction of McLaren Funeral Service, Pictou.
Memorial donations in her memory may be made to Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Atlantic Region, Scotia Square Medical Clinic, 5251 Duke St., Halifax, NS, B3J 1P3, or to a charity of choice.
