Winnifred Louise (Legato) MacKinnon, 83, Halifax, N.S., passed away peacefully in Northwood Centre on March 6, 2015.
Born in Sydney Mines, Cape Breton, she was the last surviving member of her family. Louise was the daughter of the late Daniel Edward and Hazel (Butt) MacDonald. She spent most of her life in Sydney Mines and lived for 10 years in Vancouver, B.C. She moved to Halifax in 2005 to be with her family. In her younger days Louise 'Sister' loved to dance and listen to big band music. She also enjoyed cooking and baking for her family in Cape Breton. During her years in Halifax she spent many pleasant hours with her family and their friends. In her later years her favourite pastime was a night at the movies and dinner.
Louise is survived by her daughters, Carmella Legato (John Napier), Louise Gremley (David) and her only grandson, Michael Gremley, all of whom she loved dearly. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Eileen MacDonald, Myra MacDonald; brother-in-law, Vincent Legato, all of Sydney Mines and sisters-in-law, Mary Rogers, Bridgewater, Bonita Legato, New York, as well as many nieces and nephews and extended family members.
She was preceded by her first husband, John Legato; her second husband, Lorne MacKinnon and her brothers, Bernard MacDonald, Henry (Harry) MacDonald and Meyers MacDonald.
A funeral mass will be held at St. John the Baptist Church, 26 Purcell Cove Rd., Halifax on Saturday, March 14th at 10 a.m.. A reception will be held in the church hall following the mass. Interment will be held at a later date in Sydney Mines, Cape Breton.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Northwood Centre for their excellent care and kindness to our mother in the short time she was a resident of the nursing home.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Louise’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, Soul’s Harbour Rescue Mission or a charity of your choice.
