With deepest regret we announce the passing of Bernard Francis MacDonald, 87, of 55 Henry St., Sydney on Monday, March 9, 2015, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late John Neil and Josephine (MacDonald) MacDonald. He was a member of Holy Redeemer parish.
He was employed at Sydney Steel for 41 years and retired in 1989 from the blast furnace electrical department. He looked forward to spending his summers enjoying his family and grandchildren at the summer cottage at Island View. His cats Callie, Toby and Zack gave him many years of companionship and love.
Bernie is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, the former Kay Bartkow; sons, Dennis (Jan), Raymond (Cathy) and four cherished grandchildren, Melissa, Stephen, Brian, Leah and great-granddaughter, Molly Catherine. Also surviving are his brother, Gregory (Betty), Delaware, USA and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Michael in infancy and sisters, Cecelia Moore and Etta French and brothers, Lawrence and Leo.
Visitation for Mr. MacDonald will take place on Friday, March 13 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Church with Rev. Paul Murphy officiating.
