Norman McConnachie

Passed on: March 9th, 2015

MCCONNACHIE: Norman (Mac, Sandy, Sam) of Swift Current, SK passed away on Monday March 9, 2015 at the age of 94, a life well lived. The Celebration of Life Service was held 2:00 p.m. on Friday March 13, 2015 from the First United Church with Reverend Annette Taylor officiating. The Interment Service was held from Mount Pleasant Burial Park. The pianist was Sharon Veer, eulogist was Larry Stephens, and ushers were Jeremy Priest and Keagan Lockwood. Norman was born in Kenora, ON to Thomas and Catherine McConnachie. The family moved to Sutherland, SK (now part of Saskatoon, SK) where Norm completed his schooling at City Park Collegiate. Immediately after completing his education in 1938, Norm gained employment with the Royal Bank of Canada where he remained until his retirement in 1980. From 1940 until 1945 Norm obtained a leave from the bank and enlisted in the RCAF completing tours of duty in Africa and England. Norm was a wireless operator and obtained Flight Lieutenant rank. During enlistment, Norm was awarded many medals, the most outstanding being Distinguished Flying Cross for his "outstanding ability, enthusiasm and high courage." Upon his return to Canada he met Mary Assman while they both worked at the bank in Weyburn, SK. They were married in 1947 and enjoyed 51 years together, until Mary's passing in 1998. Norm and Mary had two daughters, Heather and Gail. In 2001 Norm's "girls at Safeway" set him up on a coffee date with a lovely woman they knew, and a year later, in 2002, Shirley Wilson and Norm were married, whereupon Norm immediately obtained a large extended family. Wherever he went, he immediately made life-long friendships, whether it was through transfers with the bank, travels, clubs he was a member of, or the many many committees he was involved with over the years. Above all Norman was a gentleman. Norm is survived by his wife Shirley; his daughters Heather and her daughter Barbara, and Gail (Don) Priest and their children and grandchildren; and Shirley's children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Donations in Norm's memory may be made to the Prairie Pioneer Kiwanis c/o Ray Bunnell 476 3rd Avenue N.E., Swift Current, SK S9H 2H2 or to Dr. Irwin Foundation 2051 Saskatchewan Drive, Swift Current, SK S9H 0X6.
