Dr. Richard George Huntsman

Richard (Dick) George Huntsman passed away at the Two Acres Care Home in Taverham, Norfolk, UK on March 7th, 2015, two days after his 88th birthday. He was suffering from vascular dementia and passed away before he lost his ability to recognize and communicate with his loved ones. He leaves to mourn his loving wife Elaine and his eight children: Jennifer (Ken), Alice (Krim), Rachel (Jerome), David (Tanya), Lucy (Jerome), Tim (Patricia), Philippa (Charles), and Richard (Sunmi); his seventeen grandchildren and his sister Mary. He was predeceased by his parents George and Mary and his brother William. He was born in Perak, Malaysia and moved to England as a child. He received a scholarship to study Medicine at Cambridge University where he was awarded the gold medal for his MD thesis. He immigrated to St. John's with his family in 1975 to become a Professor at the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University and also to direct the blood transfusion services of the Canadian Red Cross. He was a great personality and a much loved teacher and he was particularly proud of the high regard and affection he elicited in his students. On four occasions during his fifteen-year tenure at Memorial he was awarded the Silver Orator Award, given to the faculty member who most impressed the graduating class of medical students. Around St. John's he was known for many things including snuff taking, two transatlantic crossings in a small converted fishing boat, befriending lost souls, and hosting outstanding Christmas parties. Through his work with the Red Cross he became a frequent guest of Peter Miller on the CBC Radio Morning Show, usually to discuss issues surrounding the blood supply and occasionally, when it was a slow day at the newsroom, because they wanted someone interesting to chat with. After retirement he moved back to England with his wife; they remained in close contact with and enjoyed visits from their many friends in Newfoundland. A funeral service will be held in Brancaster Staithe, Norfolk on March 20th with a eulogy provided by the Reverend Professor Michael Langford, an old friend and colleague from Memorial University.
