MILLER, ERNA
Erna Elizabeth (Hartz) Miller died peacefully, surrounded by family, on Sunday, March 15, 2015, at the Church of St. John and St. Stephen Home. Erna, the elder child of Ernest and Clara Hartz, was born on August 27, 1919, in Linelyst, Denmark. The family immigrated to Canada in the early 1920’s, settling in New Denmark, New Brunswick, where she and her brother were raised.
After high school, Erna graduated from Modern Business College, then entered the School of Nursing at the Saint John General, followed by additional training at the University of Toronto. It was while working at the General that she met her husband, Dr. W. Douglas Miller. Erna and Doug raised their three children in Saint John enjoying family and friends, and being active members of the community. Erna volunteered and served on boards, including the Music Festival and Family Services. She was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church (Valley). She was an avid and excellent bridge player, enjoyed gardening and needlework, but above all was dedicated to her family. A kind, loving and generous wife, mother, and grandmother, she always had time for her grandchildren, whether it was playing cards or climbing rocks at the beach. We will miss her and the home she created for us all.
Erna is survived by her brother Paul F. Hartz, of Vero Beach, Florida, her daughter Patricia (John) Noseworthy, her son John (Patricia Bell) Miller, of Hamilton, Ontario, grandsons Peter (Kathryn Ruddy) Noseworthy of Rochester, Minnesota, Mark Noseworthy, of Brooklyn, New York, and Douglas Miller of Hamilton, Ontario, granddaughter Kathleen Miller, of Hamilton, Ontario, great grandchildren John (Jack) and Charlotte Noseworthy, Rochester, Minnesota, nieces and nephews, and friend and caregiver, Huguette Rector.
Erna was preceded in death by her husband Walter Douglas Miller and her daughter Joan Elizabeth Miller.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of the Church of St. John and St. Stephen Home.
For those who wish, donations may be made to the Saint John Regional Hospital or a charity of their choice.
The family is planning a service in the late spring. Arrangements are being made through Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John.
