David J. 'Dave' MacLeod, age 74, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Tuesday, March 17, 2015, surrounded by his family.
Born in Sydney on Oct. 16, 1940, he was the son of the late Roy and Annie (MacFadyen) MacLeod of South Bar, N. S.
Dave attended Whitney School, South Bar School, Sydney Academy and graduated from Melbourne High School in Melbourne, Florida. Returning to Cape Breton, Dave worked in the lab at the Sydney Steel Corporation. Later, he moved his young family to Toronto and was employed by the BA Refinery in Clarkson, Ont. Dave was transferred home in 1971 to begin work at the Gulf Refinery, Point Tupper. In 1986, he moved to Chatham, N.B. and retired in 1994 as terminal manger of the Chatham Distribution Terminal (Ultramar) due to illness. At this time, he returned home to Cape Breton.
Dave is survived by Marilyn (Young) MacLeod, Baddeck; children, Patti Ann (Mark) Shannon, Glen Haven, Phillip (Sandy Durling), Bedford and Heather (Andrew) Powell, Halifax; grandchildren, Jessica, Samantha, Ben, Matthew, Marcus, Duncan and Abby; brothers, Ross (Ann) MacLeod, Norcross, Georgia and Allan (Margaret) MacLeod, Coxheath; aunt, Ruth (MacDonald) MacFadyen, Sydney and extended family, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Dave was known as 'Poppy' to his grandchildren and he enjoyed their visits, their sports accomplishments and their work and travel stories. Dave was passionate about sports. He enjoyed all sports and coached several community teams throughout the years. Dave was an avid fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Strait Pirates and the Screaming Eagles. He enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Baddeck Forks Golf Club, BYC and the Freewheelers Association of Baddeck. Dave enjoyed visits from his many friends from near and far. 'Old Dave ' was well known in the Baddeck community as a volunteer at the BYC and a friend to many who knew him.
The MacLeod family would like to thank the staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, ICU for their compassion and care shown to Dad during his stay. Special thanks to Cathy and Kathleen for guiding our family in his final hours.
A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, March 22, 2015, from 2-5 p.m. at the MacAulay Conference Center, Inverary Inn, Baddeck. A private family interment will take place at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the BYC Junior Sailing Program or the Victoria County Memorial Hospital Charitable Foundation.
