Mary E. Gillis, going into her 96 year, was a resident of Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, March 18, 2015, at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Born in Benacadie, she was the daughter of the late John and Christina (MacNeil) MacLennan.
She was a member of St. Anne’s Parish, Glace Bay. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting and swimming on Benacadie shore. She was a member of a women’s league which she enjoyed going to weekly. Mary also loved going for walks on Dominion Beach. Mary had completed her home nursing certificate in 1962 along with a Civil Defense of Nova Scotia certificate. Over the years she worked in many nursing homes in the Glace Bay areas.
Mary is survived by daughters, Marie Briggs,Glace Bay, Rosie Tutty, Bras d’Or, Joanie (Ronnie) Walker, Glace Bay, Theresa (Colie) MacDonnell, Mabou, Cathy Graham, Dominion, Brenda (Robert) MacInnis, Glace Bay; a son, Robert (Sonya) Gillis, Calgary; and a brother, Dan Dougal (Isabelle), Benacadie.
Also surviving are 19 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; numerous nieces, nephews; her loving companion, John Gouthro, Gardiner; and to a special grandaughter, Natalie.
Mary was predeceased by her late husband, Peter Gillis in 1970, her daughter, Patricia Gillis, 1992, two children in infancy, one great-grandchild, brothers, Neil Francis, Angus Dan, Malcolm, Alex, Jackie, Mick, Angus ‘Iah’, Alexander in infancy and sisters, Mary Anne, Josephine, Kay, Theresa and son-in-law, Basil Graham, 2004.
Visitation for Mary will be held today, Friday, March 20, 2015 in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m.
The funeral mass will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2015, in St. Anne’s Church at 10 a.m. with Fr. Leo Boone officiating followed by a reception in the church foyer. Burial will take place at a later date in St. Anne’s Cemetery.
Donations in Mary’s memory may be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
