Larry McDorman

McDORMAN, LARRY
Lawrence "Larry" Archibald McDorman passed peacefully at York Care Centre, Fredericton, in the early morning hours of Saturday, March 21, 2015, with his wife and best friend for 49 years, Betty Anne, by his side. He was 83. Born in Debert, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Lewis and Myrtle (Durning) McDorman.
Larry dedicated almost 41 years to sports reporting and newspaper management. Baseball and curling were his passions. And he was well known for his phenomenal memory of games and statistics. He was a sports reporter and columnist for The Halifax Chronicle Herald; sports editor and then managing editor of The Fredericton Daily Gleaner. He set high standards and cared deeply for his staff and community.
Larry raised a large family. He loved and was proud of each one. He is survived by a daughter, Lawra Hanscomb (Darren), Fredericton; four sons, Ted (Allana Lindgren), Victoria, BC; Derek (Carol Foley), Toronto, ON; Adam (Gabriela Guevara), Darmstadt, Germany; Joshua, Omaha, NE. His grandsons, Charlie and Nicholas Hanscomb, brought sunshine to his final years. He lost children to Huntington’s disease, but they lived each day in his heart: sons, Kirby and Paul; grandson, Michael.
He loved to travel, especially taking autumn rambles through New England, and sharing the anticipation of spring baseball in Arizona with Ted and Derek. He fostered that same love and joy for baseball that continues today in his grandson, Charlie. Even Alzheimer’s could not diminish his love of reading and collecting sports books, aviation history and mysteries. Growing up in Debert during the War years, he later applied his aircraft knowledge and appreciation to constructing a large collection of model planes.
The family would particularly like to thank all of our friends, relatives, co-workers and church family for the many prayers and encouragement during this last part of Larry’s journey. Special thanks to our wonderful caring family on Tower 3, York Care Centre, and, previously, Dr. Louise Ruest and the staff of Bayshore and the NB Extra Mural Program for their care and support.
Visitation at McAdam’s Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 24, 2015, from 6 to 8 PM. A Service of Thanksgiving for Larry’s life will take place at 2 PM on Wednesday, March 25, 2015, at St. Anne’s Chapel of Ease, Westmorland at Charlotte, Archdeacon Patricia Drummond and Canon John Sharpe officiating.
Donations in memory of Larry can be made to York Care Centre, the Debert Military Museum, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
