ABERCROMBIE – Thomas Melvin “Ike” Murray, age 88, of Abercrombie, passed away Saturday, March 21, 2015 in the Aberdeen Hospital.
Born in Trenton, he was a son of the late Thomas and Emma Grant (Reid) Murray.
He was a veteran of the Second World War and a member of Royal Canadian Legion Br. 29 Trenton. He worked at Trenton Works, operated a grocery business in Hillside, operated a bowling alley in Dartmouth and later owned a bowling alley in Oromocto, NB. His bowling career began in the 1940’s and included being a member of 4 Nova Scotia Championship teams, 7 New Brunswick Championship teams, including 5 consecutive, and several Maritime Championship teams. He twice represented Nova Scotia at the World Candlepin Championships and on one occasion, had the third highest average of the 1000 competitors. He had the highest average for 12 consecutive years in the Main Street League at the former Vee-Eight Lanes in New Glasgow which was considered the best league in the county and one of the best in the province. He served as President of the New Brunswick Men’s Bowling Association and President of the Maritime Men’s Bowling Association. For his accomplishments he was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame, only the second bowler to be inducted, the Pictou County Sports Heritage Hall of Fame and the Sports Wall of Fame in Fredericton. His other sports interests included being manager of the Trenton Scotians and New Glasgow Rangers hockey teams and the Trenton Scotians Senior softball team. He owned horses and was involved in harness racing in NB for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Marie (MacIntosh); daughter, Sandra (Ed) Watters, Melmerby Beach; son, Lane (Jackie), Fredericton; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Vivian (Humphreys); son, Melvin Glenn; step-son, Patrick Barker; brother, Emerson Stewart “Amie”.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation by request. A public graveside service will be held at a later date in the Abercrombie Cemetery with a celebration of life to follow at the Trenton Legion.
