Bessie A. MacAulay, age 104 of Seafoam, died at Glen Haven Manor in New Glasgow on Friday, April 10, 2015.
Born in Westville on May 6th, 1910, the daughter of David E. and Catherine (MacDonald) MacKenzie. She moved with her parents in 1911 to Elm Valley Farm in Durham where she spent her childhood. Bessie began her teaching career at the age of 17 in Upper Mount Thom School and retired in 1971 from Patterson Elementary School after 38 years of teaching. During the Second World War, she worked as a clerk at the shipyard in Pictou. In 1943, Bessie married Alec MacMaster of Seafoam where they lived a happy and active life.
She was a valued member of St. David’s Presbyterian Church, Toney River. She served on the Board of Managers, a life member of the Atlantic Missionary Society, a member of the Ladies Aid, The Christian Education Committee, The Ladies Bible Study, and a faithful choir member for many years.
Bessie is survived by her sister Edith Fraser; predeceased by three brothers and one sister; also, predeceased by husbands Alec MacMaster, Lester Battist, and Tom MacAulay. This great lady will be missed by a large family and many friends.
The family will receive visitors at McLaren Funeral Home in Pictou on Tuesday, April 14th from 1-3 and 6-8pm. A celebration of Bessie’s life will be held in St. David’s Presbyterian Church, Toney River, on Wednesday April 15th at 11:00am with Rev. Greg Dickson officiating. Reception to follow. Cremation has taken place. Interment will be in The Heatherdale Memorial Gardens at a later date. Family flowers only. Donations in Bessie’s memory may be made to St. David’s Presbyterian Church or to a charity of choice.
