Phyllis I. Newman

The death occurred peacefully at Whisperwood Villa on Sunday, April 12, 2015, of Phyllis I. Newman (nee Easton) aged 94.
Phyllis was born in Hampshire and lived most of her life in New Haven, Dunedin and Cornwall. She was the beloved wife of Stanley Newman and loving mother of Dr. Lewis (Stella), and Kevin (Joanne). She is survived by seven grandchildren: Christopher, Stephen (Heather), Christian (Sheryl), Courtney, Philip, Kimberley and Paige; and two great-grandchildren: Matthew and Justin. She is also survived by her brother, Arnold Easton (Tena), in Moncton, daughter-in-law, Marcia (B.C.,) and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband of 70 years, Stanley; parents, John (Jack) Easton and Irene Easton (nee Trowsdale); son, Delmar; infant daughter, Dulsie; sisters-in-law, Lennie (Harrison) Green, Reta (Leonard) Newson; and brother-in-law, Alton (Florence) Newman.
Phyllis spent most of her life involved with music. She started playing piano at an early age and served as organist and choir director for over six decades at various churches including Cornwall, New Dominion, Kingston and Park Royal United Churches. In the days of one and two room rural schools, she worked as a traveling music teacher. She is remembered for organizing and participating in school and church concerts. She volunteered her talents for many charitable and fundraising efforts and played at numerous nursing and seniors' homes.
In the days before dial telephones, Phyllis operated the New Haven rural telephone exchange for The Island Telephone Co. for many years out of her home in New Haven.
Phyllis and Stanley operated a tourist home and motel in New Haven for 20 years.
Resting at Belvedere Funeral Home for visitation on Friday, April 17, from 3-7 p.m. Funeral service will be held at the Belvedere Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, April 18, at 10:30 a.m. Interment later in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Equipment Fund or the Cornwall Pastoral Charge Memorial Fund.
