DEMPSEY, Layton Freeman, 83 of Lower Sackville and Morden passed away suddenly on Monday, March 30, 2015 at home. Born in Gaspereau, NS, he was a son of the late Doris (Dempsey) Cox. Layton worked in construction and property management for the majority of his career and prior to his retirement he was owner/operator of Dunkerley’s Stationary Store in Southampton, New York. Layton was actively involved in his communities of Lower Sackville, NS and Southampton, NY and was a founding charter member of the Sackville Lions Club. Layton and his dear friend and fellow Lion, Ben Blinn, helped to rebuild the Sackville Lion’s Den. Layton was at his happiest puttering around the cottage property at Morden and had a love for antique farm tractors. Layton was a kind and devoted husband, father and grandfather who was very proud of his children and grandchildren. Layton is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, the former Patricia Shaw, Lower Sackville, NS; children, Karen Dempsey (Robert Falls), Crescent Beach, NS; David (Cynthia Freeman) Dempsey, Southampton, NY; and Nancy Dempsey (Mark Jamieson), Middle Sackville, NS; sister, Deborah Cox, Merced, California; Aunt Fearn Dempsey, Kingston, NS; grandchildren, Dylan Falls, Sean Falls, Allison Dempsey, Spencer Dempsey, Hannah Crossman, Paige Crossman and Kyle Jamieson and numerous cousins. By request, there was no visitation. A funeral service was held 2:00PM, Tuesday, April 7, 2015 in St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Auburn with Rev. Cathy Pharo officiating. Interment in St. Mary’s Anglican Cemetery, Auburn. Reception followed in church hall. By request, family flowers only. Donations in memory of Layton may be made to the Lower Sackville Lions Club, St. Mary’s Anglican Cemetery or a Charity of Choice.
