RIDGWAY, HARVEY "MATT"
It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Harvey “Matt” Ridgway on April 21, 2015 at his home. Born in Toronto, ON, March 9, 1936, he was a son of the late Tom and Ethel “Dolly” (Harvey) Ridgway of Collingwood, ON.
Matt enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1953 and spent 28 years serving before his retirement in 1980 as a Chief Petty Officer 1st Class. He continued his service in the Naval Reserve at HMCS Brunswicker until 1999. Matt completed his working career with Canada Customs and Immigration in 2002.
Matt had many interests that kept him busy for several years after retirement. He was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 58 and the RAOB. Matt loved to travel across the US and Canada to spend time with his friends and family.
Matt was also an avid and passionate NASCAR fan who travelled far and wide to watch #3 and #88 race for the checkered flag.
Matt was predeceased by his wife, Patricia (Pat) Ridgway and son-in-law Joseph “Joe” Murphy.
He is survived by his children, Mark Cunningham of Barrie, ON, Keely Murphy (Jeff Polenz) of Haymarket, VA, Matthew Ridgway (Jessica Steele) of Cold Lake, AB; his loving grandchildren, Lauren, Morgan and Reagan Murphy, Stephen Ridgway and Sadie Cunningham; sisters and brothers-in-law; several nieces and nephews; and his very dear friends, Anne Cunningham and Don Baker (Denise).
Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634-7424) with visiting on Sunday, April 26, 2015 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm; with a Royal Canadian Legion Tribute to a Veteran service at 6pm. A celebration of Matt’s life will be held on Monday, April 27, 2015 at 12:00 pm from Brenan’s Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will take place at Ocean View Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances made to Bobby’s Hospice or Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
