Walter Horace McClare, age 86, of Hillsvale, Hants County, passed away on Friday, April 24, 2015, at the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born in Windsor, Hants County, Nova Scotia, on April 16, 1929, Walter was the son of the late J. Horace and Alice V. (Lyon) McClare. Walter was an owner and operator of McClare Bros Ltd. of Hillsvale, Hants County, a generational family business. He started working in the lumber industry at a young age, and continued running small businesses into his 70’s. Walter was recognized in 2013 by the Hants-Kings Community Business Development Corporation for 16 years of dedicated service to community economic development in Hants and Kings Counties as a Board Member and Resource Person. He also enjoyed meeting with local business investors in Windsor. He was a supporter of the South Rawdon Baptist Church and a member of the Masonic Lodge. Good fiddle music, working out at the local gym, and ice cream were some of his favorite things. Always on the go, he could often be spotted at the Crossroads Restaurant. He also loved cars and getting good deals on his motor vehicles. He continued his adventures right up until his final days, finding enjoyment in his family, friends and activities. Walter is survived by his daughters, Anna (Mitchell) Brison, Falmouth; Nancy (Kevin) McMillan, Dartmouth; Sarah (Allison Scott) McClare, Sackville; son, Frederick “Fred” (Maria Wong) McClare, Three Mile Plains; daughter-in-law, Olivia McClare, Hillsvale; son-in-law, Marc Lapointe, Hemford, Lunenburg Co.; grandchildren, Matthew & Melanie McClare; Brittany & Michael Lapointe; Hannah & Seth Brison; Lisa, Heather & Corey McMillan; Michael Julian Wong; Catie Scott; sisters, Pauline Goldsmith, Dartmouth; Edith (Budd) Paul, Dartmouth; brothers, Rev. Donald (Pearl) McClare, Windsor; Layton (Doreen) McClare, Fredericton, NB; Besides his parents, Walter was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, the former Helen Margaret Dunbar (2005); son, Robert “Rob” McClare (2005); daughter, Margaret Lapointe (2011); brother, Edwin McClare; and two brothers in infancy. Visitation was 2-4 p.m. Monday, April 27, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home, (902-798-2232), 194 King Street, P.O. Box 2218, Windsor, followed by a Masonic Tribute by Uniacke Lodge #128 A.F. & A.M., Mount Uniacke, and with visitation continuing until 8:30 p.m. A memorial service was 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, 2015, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Alex Mosher officiated, followed by interment in the Ste. Croix Cemetery, Cemetery Road, St. Croix and then a reception at the home of his daughter, Anna and Mitchell Brison, 85 Mountain View Drive, Falmouth. No flowers by request.
