Passed in: Sydney, Canada
Passed on: May 1st, 2015
Sister Eleanor Graham died peacefully on Friday, May 1, 2015, at the CND Health Care Centre, Sydney.
Born in Antigonish, N.S. on Aug. 1, 1913, she was the daughter of the late John Gerard Graham and Anne Isabel McKeough.
Sister Eleanor entered the Congregation of Notre Dame in 1931 and made profession on Aug. 23, 1933. During her years of religious life, she served as teacher and school administrator in Montreal, and in various places throughout the Maritimes including Sydney, New Glasgow, New Victoria and Mabou. Sister Eleanor’s gifts as a creative thinker were particularly manifested when, in 1956, she initiated the Family Life Program in Mabou, long before it became an integral part of the school curriculum of Nova Scotia.
Upon retirement from the school system, Sister Eleanor served on the CND Provincial Leadership Team as Councillor for Education. Following that assignment, she served as local community leader at St. Joseph’s Convent, Mabou and Holy Angels Convent, Sydney. Upon completion of those CND assignments, and for another 15 years, Eleanor involved herself in various volunteer ministries. Sister Eleanor was, indeed, a woman of deep faith, whose life of prayer sustained her throughout her many years of dedicated ministry.
In 2001, declining health brought Sister Eleanor to the CND Health Care Centre where she continued her ministry of prayer for others, while being lovingly ministered to by our dedicated staff. All who knew Eleanor are, indeed, grateful to this valiant woman whose long life was so well lived.
Sister Eleanor is survived by sister-in-law Marie Graham, New Market, Ontario and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by sisters Lina, Mary Agnes, Winnifred and Anne, and brothers John, James, Joseph, William and Martin.
Visitation for Sister Eleanor will be held on Tuesday, May 5, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church, Sydney, with Rev. Bill Burke officiating. Interment will be in the CND plot at St. Ninian’s Parish Cemetery, Antigonish, N.S.
