COTTREAU, Rachael Marie - Passed away suddenly and peacefully in her 97th year on April 30, 2015, in the QEII Health Sciences Center, surrounded by the love of her daughter, sister and niece. Born December 30, 1917, in Sluice Point, Yarmouth, Co., she was the eldest daughter of Melbourne and Berthe Emma (Babin) Bourque. After graduating from Normal College in Truro in 1937, she taught school for several years before marrying Ernest G. Cottreau of Yarmouth, where they established their home. Rachael was a loving and cherished wife and mother, the heart and soul of her small, happy family. She and her husband shared a close partnership during their 63 years of marriage and he greatly valued her wisdom, grace and intelligence throughout the different stages of his career. A lady of deep faith, she was a devoted member of St. Ambrose Cathedral in Yarmouth for 67 years, which brought her much comfort and strength. She also found joy in the many long-standing friendships formed during this time. In 2013, she moved from Yarmouth to Halifax and took up residence at Parkland at the Gardens. This brave change proved to be a very happy, successful choice. She made new, special friends, was closer to family and received excellent support from the caring staff at Parkland. Rachael is survived by her daughter, Simone, of Halifax and Chester; sisters, Zita Chapman, Rolande Hanga, Viola (John) O’Connor, all of Halifax; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband the Honorable Ernest G. Cottreau; brother, Bruno Bourque; sister, Jeanette Bourque. Visitation took place in Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Yarmouth on Sunday, May 3 from 7-9 p.m. A Funeral Mass was held on Monday, May 4 at 11 a.m. in St. Ambrose Cathedral, Yarmouth Msgr. Gerald LeBlanc officiated. Donations in memory may be made to Yarmouth Hospital Foundation, 60 Vancouver St., Yarmouth, B5A 2P5 or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
