REZANSOFF, Paul John
Memorial service for Paul Rezansoff, 73, of Swift Current, who died April 26 in Regina General Hospital, was held May 1 in the Credit Union iPlex with David Konkin officiating.
Born March 16, 1942, at the family farm in the Stoney Creek district near Kamsack, Sask. He attended Saskatchewan Teacher’s College in Regina. He began his teaching career in 1962 in Clair and returned to Kamsack in 1963 to teach. It was during this period he met Donna Alexander, the new Kamsack Unit Librarian, whom he married on October 8, 1966. In 1968, he taught at the Yorkton Junior High. He continued his education at the University of Saskatchewan, receiving a Bachelor of Education in 1969 and a Bachelor of Arts in 1983. They moved to Swift Current in 1969 when Paul became an Art Instructor at the Swift Current Comprehensive High School where he taught until his retirement in 1993.
Paul was a consummate volunteer who deeply believed in working to improve his community, province and nation. His involvement with Arts Councils began as a board member of the Yorkton Arts Council in 1968 and flourished when he joined the Swift Current Allied Arts Council in 1969 which he worked passionately and tirelessly to bring visual and performing Arts to Swift Current for the next 45 years serving most notably as Gallery Building Committee Chairman, Performing Arts Committee Chairman and President. He was the director of the Recreation Centre Gallery in Swift Current for 4 years and the first director of the National Exhibition Centre in Swift Current and served as its Board Chairman for 20 years. He served on a multitude of City of Swift Current Committees including the Tourism Committee, Swift Current Museum Board and Provincial Centennial Committee. He was a board member of Tourism Swift Current and Action Swift Current and Vice Chairman of Swift Current and District Community Owned Radio Broadcast System. Provincially, he served as Chairman of Saskatchewan Arts Board and Saskatchewan Council of Cultural Organizations; and as President of Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils. Other groups he served include: Saskatchewan Society for Education Through Art, Canadian Society for Education Through Art, Sask. Sport Trust Board, Southwest Saskatchewan Writers Project, Saskatchewan’s Department of Education Minister’s Advisory Committee on the Fine Arts in Education and Saskatchewan's Office of the Provincial Secretary’s Citizens Advisory Council on Anniversaries.
Paul received recognition for his volunteerism, life-long commitment and leadership in making the arts more accessible to rural Saskatchewan with the South West Recreation Association Volunteer Recognition Award, Swift Current and District Chamber of Commerce “Citizen of the Year” Award, 5 Most Fascinating People in Swift Current in 2009, OSAC Life Membership Award, Saskatchewan Centennial Medal, Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal, Canadian Silver Jubilee Medal, Lescarbot Award, and the Queen’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee Medals. The recognition he was most proud of was his investiture as a Member of the Order of Canada in 2000.
Predeceased by his mother, Lusha, in 1972; his father John, in 1986; and his sisters Marion Posnikoff, in 1982 and Vivian Fletcher in 2000. He is survived by his wife, Donna, of Swift Current; two daughters, Lauren, of Swift Current and Sandra (John Boisvenue) of Ottawa and her daughter, Lara Boisvenue; and his sister, Phyllis Konkin, of Winnipeg.
