Clarence Hansvall

Passed on: May 4th, 2015

1935 ~ HANSVALL ~ 2015
Clarence “Clary” Hansvall aged 80 years of Medicine Hat, Alberta and formerly of Tompkins, passed away on Monday, May 4, 2015 at Medicine Hat, Alberta following a lengthy illness. Clary was born on the family farm south of Tompkins, on January 7, 1935 to Carl and Clara Honsvall. He attended Central and Progressive Country Schools. On March 16, 1956 Clary married the love of his life, Joyce Erickson. Clary and Joyce enjoyed a busy life on the farm raising their four children: Kim, Shane, Tex and Heidi. Grain farming, raising pigs and dairy cows kept Clary busy. Along with his keen wit and sense of humor, Clary handed down a hard work ethic to all of his children. Determined to keep working the farm as long as he could, the boys remember lifting their dad into the tractor and strapping his crutches to the cab. In his younger days, Clary enjoyed taking the boys to their hockey games and helping out in the dressing room or in the box. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting when he found the time to go. The farm was a common gathering place for coffee and visits with neighbors, family and friends.
In 1993, Clary and Joyce moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta. This move allowed Clary to be closer to health care and also afford him some freedoms he didn’t have on the farm. He enjoyed going to Tiger games and seldom missed a performance of the Medicine Hat Stampede. Clary never allowed his illness to get him down and faced each situation with humor and a positive attitude. He very much looked forward to visits and card games with friends and family. The highlight of
his days became Joyce’s cooking and his home care workers stopping in. Likely he brightened their day as much as they brightened his. Because of Joyce’s 24/7 unyielding dedication to caring for him, Clary was able to stay at home until the last few months. Clary was predeceased by his parents, Carl and Clara Honsvall; siblings, Ragnhild Norman, Esther Honsvall, Harold Honsvall, Arthur Honsvall; brothers-in-law, Lawrence McMillan and Bruce Elmgren; and son-in-law, Paul Turgeon. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Joyce; his four children, Kim (Dave Hardman) Turgeon-Hardman, Shane (Shannon) Hansvall, Tex (Carol) Hansvall and Heidi (Kerry) Yuzik; thirteen grandchildren, Matthew Turgeon, Mason (Sarah) Turgeon and their daughter, Quinn, Stacey Hansvall and her children, Kieran Gibson and Avah Hansvall, Chelsey (Eddie) Brown, Keagan Hansvall and his son, Masen Hudson and Masen's mom, Katie, Sara (Andrew King) Hansvall, Haylee Hansvall, Kyle Hansvall, Cassie Hansvall, Jesse Yuzik, Tori Yuzik, Riley Yuzik and Stephanie (Peter) Elliott; two sisters, Ruth McMillan and Lilly Elmgren; two sisters-in-law, Phyllis (Maurice) McIllwrick and June (Scott) Harvey; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. from Fifth Avenue United Church in Medicine Hat. Reverend Helen Reid officiated. The eulogy was presented by Jay Drever. Kyle Hansvall was the urn bearer. Honorary Pallbearers were all his grandchildren. A family internment service will be held at Memory Gardens in Swift Current, Saskatchewan at a later date. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL AND CREMATORIUM, “The Chapel in the Park”, Medicine Hat, Alberta.
