Harry Tkachuk passed away very peacefully at home on May 11, 2015 with his family at his side. He was born April 19, 1937. Left to mourn his passing are his loving wife Barbara; daughter Amy (Roger) Shipley; grandson Kyle (Michelle) Shipley; granddaughter Cheylyn (Adam) O’Neil and precious great grandson Wyatt O’Neil; his stepchildren Shane (Lilia) Svenkeson, Rick (Kirstie) Svenkeson, Allana Hawkes; 8 step grandchildren and 2 step great grandchildren. Harry is also survived by 2 brothers Taras (Mervi) Tkachuk and Jerry Tkachuk; 4 sisters Nettie Caruk, Iris Plunkett, Sylvia (Pete) Safaric and Marian (Johnny) Smart; 2 sisters-in-law Carol Tkachuk and Linda Tkachuk. Barbara’s family will also miss Harry. Her parents Allan and Irene White; sisters Sonia (Ken) Fidyk, Beth (Marcel) Whitford, Debbie (Nick) Geisinger, Tammy (Don) Meyers; brothers Les (Marleen) White, Lyle (Donna) White; sister-in-law Cindy White. Harry was predeceased by his parents Steve and Millie Tkachuk; 1 sister in infancy, Evelyn and 4 brothers Bob, Orest, Keith and Jack and one brother-in-law Walter Caruk. Harry was born and raised in Gronlid and he took his schooling in Gronlid as well He married Evelyn Gamble and had one daughter Amy. Harry worked a short time farming with his brothers, worked in the mines and was also a keeper of light houses on the west coast. Ever since he has had a fascination with the Pacific Ocean and large ships. After this he settled down in Prince Albert as a Correction Officer and continued with this career for nearly 30 years. For many years he managed the vegetable gardens for the jail and he was so proud of his produce, a job he loved because he was an outdoors man. He spent many evenings during the spring and fall rototilling gardens in the neighborhood. He also loved to camp, hunt and fish. He spent many seasons at White Swan Lake fishing for lake trout. Seldom was he ever skunked when he went out for a fish. He loved the lake and was totally relaxed when he was there. The freezer always held wild meat whether moose, elk or deer. After retirement Harry loved the Fall when he could combine for local farmers. Harry and Barb enjoyed 20 years together and did a bit of travelling. Wednesday evenings were always kaiser night with the club. He took his game very seriously and enjoyed a good game at home whenever company came over. He also enjoyed keeping up with the news and politics and also watched many sports on TV. Harry was also a great dancer and loved fiddle music. Memorial Service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at Gray’s Funeral Chapel with Dave McPherson officiating. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations can be made to The Victoria Hospital Foundation for the Cancer Outpatients Department. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca.
