It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michael Francis Berger, 58, on May 13, 2015, at home surrounded by his loving family, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in New Waterford, Michael was the youngest son of the late Walter Charles and Mary Hill (Stewart) Berger.
Michael worked at Canada Post in 1977 as a letter carrier for 35 years and retired in 2012. Michael’s passion was for woodworking and carpentry where he took great pride in everything he built. Michael enjoyed golfing and also he loved the time with his family at Johnston’s Harbour.
Michael faced his illness the same way he faced any obstacle in life, with courage and determination. He was an exceptional family man with a kind and generous heart.
Michael is survived by his loving wife Linda (Johnston) Berger and his two daughters, Melissa (Cory Walsh), Airdrie, Alta., and Michaela, at home, mother-in-law Colleen Johnston. Also left to mourn are his brothers, John (Barbara), Brockville, Ont., Bob (Lynn), Dartmouth, N.S., Billy (Jean), Glace Bay, N.S.; sisters-in-law Carm Berger, St. John’s, N.L., Joan (Johnston) Barnes, Burlington, Ont., brothers in-law, Danny Johnston, Toronto, Colin Johnston, Red Deer, Alta., Kenny (Pam) Johnston, Halifax, Terry (Deneyse) Johnston and sister in-law Debbie Johnston. Along with many close and dear nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Besides his parents Michael was predeceased by his brother Walter Thomas Berger and father -in-law Daniel Joseph Johnston.
Special thanks to all the doctors, nurses and staff who took such great care of Michael over the past several months. He will be extremely missed but never forgotten.
As a celebration of Michael’s life, a funeral mass will take place on, Friday, May 15, 2015, at 2 p.m., at Holy Redeemer Parish, Whitney Pier, with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. A luncheon will follow in the parish basement.
As an expression of sympathy for Michael, memorial donations in his memory may be made to Palliative Care or the Cape Breton Cancer Centre Patient Care Fund.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home.
