POIRIER, RETD CHIEF LIONEL JOSEPH
It is with great sadness that the family of Lionel Poirier announce his passing which occurred on May 15th 2015. He was born in Rogersville, N.B.
Lionel is survived by his cherished wife of 62 years, Dorothea (Saulnier) and two daughters; Iris Tenhave (Frank) and Joan Matheson (Stephen). He is also survived by two granddaughters; Sarah (Jamie), Rachel (Jean Francois), three grandsons; Stephen, Matthew (Patricia) and Adam. He will be missed by his four great-grandchildren, Cameron, Cail, Scarlett and Jack.
Lionel was predeceased by his son Stephen, two brothers and two sisters.
Lionel spent 30 years serving in Military and Civilian policing. He spent 14 months in Korea and Japan with the Canadian Provost Corps. Lionel was a graduate of the Military Police School and Canadian Police College (R.C.M.P) in Executive Development. He also served 18 years as Chief of Police in 5 municipalities throughout Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
Lionel was awarded the Queens Jubilee Medal for Excellence in Policing from the Lt. Governor of New Brunswick.
In 1980, Lionel was founding Chief of the New Brunswick Highway Patrol until 1986 and retired from the Solicitor Generals Department in 1996. Lionel spent 12 years with the Corps of Commissionaires retiring in 2014.
Lionel was a man of great faith and member of St. Joachim’s Church, and a proud member of the Knights of Columbus Council #8364 and the FM Lockery Assembly 4th Degree.
Lionel will be resting at the Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424).
A Knights of Columbus Service will be held on Sunday, May 17th 2015 commencing the first visitation between 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Second visitation will be held on Monday May 18th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. A Tribute to a Veteran Service will be held commencing the evening visitation between 6:00-8:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, May 19th at 11:00 a.m. from St. Joachim’s Church. Interment to follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be placed with Bobby’s Hospice, St. Joachim’s Church, Extra Mural Hospital or charity of donor’s choice
