Doreen Blair

BLAIR, DOREEN
Doreen Lillian Blair (Horsnell) died peacefully May 16 at the Doctor Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton, at the age of 92. Doreen was born in Fredericton and lived there most of her life, but also spent much time at Lake George.

Family, friends, sports and politics highlighted her life. She would light up a room, porch or beach for whoever was with her with big smiles and rich laughter. She would also go out of her way to help people who needed it.

Doreen was very active in both the curling and golfing communities in Fredericton until her health prevented her from participating in the sports competitively, and then actively supported her clubs socially. She was Past President of the Ladies section of the Capital Winter Club, four times Senior Ladies Curling Champ, played six times on the Senior Ladies Provincial Golf Team. She was proud to say she was both a member of the 8-Ender Club in curling and the Hole-in-One Club in golf. Doreen was an honorary member of the Capital Winter Club and loved visiting and selling 50/50 tickets on winter evenings and affectionately called “Ma Blair” by many of its members.

In addition to her love of competitive sports, Doreen was a political junkie and was a member and supporter of the liberal party. She loved life and being busy, socializing, meeting people and telling stories, fiddle-heading, skating, crocheting and spending time at the lake and seeing her family and friends. She spent many summers at Lake George growing up and during her married life, running a canteen and being the centre of activity. In more recent years she visited her family and nephews and nieces there as often as possible.

Doreen will be missed by her son, Stuart (Janet) Blair, Lake George, her daughter Diane (Aurele) Richard of Lake George, her sisters, Gwen (Jim) Scott, Fredericton, Marjorie Whitcomb, Saint John, Lillian (Bill) Kimmo of Toronto and her brother John (Ann) Horsnell, Lake George, her special friend and neighbour Trish Dewitt and many loved nephews, nieces, great nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her husband Fred Blair (2005), her daughter Jo Ann, her brother Alfred Horsnell (Sonnie) and her sister Phyllis Horsnell.

Special thanks to Dr. Plummer for his continual kindness and care, the nurses on 4NE, 3 East, to Laura in Emergency for making her so comfortable and to Lyle on 4NE for his endless patience and encouragement to Doreen.

Visitation will be held at McAdams Funeral Home on Tuesday May 19th from 2:00 to 7:00 pm. A Celebration of her life will take place on Wednesday, May 20, at Christ Church Parish Church (St. Anne’s) at 2:00 pm with Rev. Canon John Sharpe and Rev. Wandalyn Snelgrove officiating. Interment will be at Fredericton Rural Cemetery extension immediately following service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Red Cross or charity of the donor’s choice. Online condolences may be made at www.mcadamsfh.com.
