Patricia Bell

BELL, PATRICIA
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Patricia “Pat” Bell announces her passing, on May 15, 2015 in the Palliative Care Suite at Rocmaura Nursing Home.

Born in 1927 in Simcoe, Ontario, she was the daughter of Clarence (C.L.) Blayney and Margaret (Hair). Her father owned an apple orchard and Pat, along with her elder sister Ruth, worked on the farm during the Second World War. Pat started teaching all grades in a one-room schoolhouse at the age of 19. Soon after that, she attended the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and received her Diploma in piano. While teaching in Ottawa, she met her husband Tom Bell, MP for Saint John, at a political function and they later eloped in 1957.

Pat thoroughly enjoyed political life and raising a family in Ottawa. She was the backbone of the family who provided unwavering support. From raising the children while Tom was away, to feeding classes of schoolchildren visiting from Saint John, to leading the sing-alongs on the piano, she was in her element. After returning to Saint John, she was involved with many charities including the IODE, Red Cross, and Trinity Church. Pat later returned to teaching music for a few years as a supply teacher. She was also an accomplished seamstress. Pat loved her dogs and was always generous in the sharing of her grand dog Angus who is well known for his therapy skills.

She was a fiercely independent and strong willed woman who kept her sense of humor until the end. Pat is survived by her three sons, Michael, James, and Andrew; one daughter Melanie (John) Bell Hughes, sister-in-law Lynn Bell and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Clarence and Margaret (Hair); husband Tom, sister Ruth (Blayney); brothers-in-law Larry (Betty) and Robert (Florence) Bell.

Pat’s children would like to acknowledge all of those who cared for her over the years following her decline in health. There are too many names to mention. However, they are very appreciative of the people who were so engaged in making this difficult journey more bearable. Also, a sincere thanks to the staff of Rocmaura Nursing Home for their love and caring kindness over these past five years.

Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424) with visitation being held on Wednesday, May 20, from 3 to 7pm. A celebration of Mom’s Life will be held at Trinity Anglican Church, 115 Charlotte Street on Thursday, May 21 at 2pm. Interment will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Muscular Dystrophy Canada Fundy Chapter or Rocmaura Foundation. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.fundyfuneralhome.com
