It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Michael Joseph MacSween, 81, husband, father, grandfather and uncle, on May 15, 2015. He died peacefully at home after a short battle with cancer. As we mourn his loss, we joyfully remember and celebrate his life.
Michael was born on Aug. 1, 1933 in the North End of Sydney where he lived most of his life until he met his best friend and wife, Marie. They made their home in Dutch Brook and later moved to Whitney Pier where he lived the rest of his life.
Mike was a plumber by trade and began his career at Carl's Plumbing & Heating, Glace Bay, before working at Sydney Engineering and Dry Dock. The final 34 years of his career were at Sydney Steel. Retiring in 1997, his time at the Plant was spent as a crane operator in the open hearth and later in the electric arc furnace.
Mike was a devoted husband, proud father, grandfather and uncle. He was a true gentleman and worked tirelessly his entire life for his family. He enjoyed drawing, painting, music, reading and was a great storyteller. Mike loved spending time at the library and going on outdoor adventures that included trips to the beach. His favourite spot was Angus R's as it was so close to his family's summer home in Piper's Cove. His love of swimming was passed on to many, especially his granddaughters who he has spent much time with since his retirement.
Mike enjoyed early mornings and on weekends, was a familiar face at yard sales looking for treasures he would share with his family.
Mike is the son of the late Joseph A. and Mary Sarah (MacNeil) MacSween.
He was predeceased by his brothers, John 'Archie' (Winnie), Alex and a brother in infancy; sisters, Elizabeth 'Liz' and Mary MacNeil (Charlie); mother-in-law, Mildred Butts and friend, Des Pendergast.
Mike was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Mike is survived by his wife of 43 years, Marie (Butts); daughter, Sharon (Glenn MacNeil), granddaughters, Sacha MacSween-Hall, Glenna and Penelope MacNeil, all of Sydney; nephews, Allan (Rose), Piper's Cove, and Dennis (Helen), Boisdale; grandnieces and grandnephews.
The family gives a special thank you to all who made Mike's last month with us as comfortable as possible. The compassion, empathy and understanding that have been received from so many at this difficult time are greatly appreciated.
By following Mike's wishes, cremation has taken place with no service. A gathering of family and friends to celebrate the life of Michael will be held in the family home on Friday, May 22, 2015, from 6-9 p.m.
To honour Michael, donations may be made in his memory to Pancreatic Cancer Canada.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family at www.pierfuneralhome.com.
