It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Peter Vincent O’Day, age 79. Surrounded with close family and friends by his side, Peter passed away at home on Saturday, May 23, 2015, after a short but courageous battle with brain cancer.
Born in Port Morien, he was the son of the late John and Madeline (Hardy) O’Day.
Dad was a very kind, loving , easy going person who had a great sense of humour. He was a man of very strong faith. Besides frequenting Collettes Restaurant, he also enjoyed spending time at home with his three dogs Amber, Mya and Joey, watching TV and taking naps. He was also a choir member at Immaculate Conception Church.
At 17, he moved to the US and spent three years in the US Army (82nd Airborne). He started long-haul trucking at age 23 and continued until his retirement at age 72. Over the years he worked for St. Johnsbury Trucking, Cambridge, Mass.; Hilman’s Transport and Tommy MacDonald Trucking, both of Sydney.
He is survived by his three daughters, Ashley (Justin) O’Day, River Ryan, with whom he resided, Dawn (Eddie) Mastro, Lynn (Donnie) Ferrera, Massachusetts; stepson, John (Jenn) Ioannides, Victoria, B.C.; his two sisters, Annie May Tauro, Massachusetts, Elizabeth Shepardson, Sydney; his brother, Jimmy O’Day, Massachusetts; his grandchildren, Jenna and Mario Mastro, Rocco and Sophia Ferrera, Massachusetts; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife Dianne (Burke), brothers, Dennis and Alfred as well as his sisters, Margaret, Ernesteen, Matilda and Madeline and mother in-law, Anne Burke.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 26 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass, officiated by Fr. Dan Boudreau will take place Wednesday, May 27 at 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport, Dominion. Following the mass a reception will be held in the church hall. Cremation to follow with interment at a later date at St Anne’s Parish Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Palliative Care, VON or a charity of one’s choice.
We would like to sincerely thank our family and friends, VON and Palliative Care, especially Michelle who helped provide us with the support we needed to keep our Dad at home.
