Shirley, Wallace Maynard, "Wally", age 89, of Swift Current, passed away May 19, 2015 at his home. The Graveside Service was held at 3:30 pm, at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Veterans Plot with Captain Micheal Ramsey officiating. The Urn Bearer was Joe Mackay. The Piper was grandson Craig Shirley, who played "Flowers of the Forest." Legion Rites and an Honor Guard were presented by members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch # 56, Swift Current, Sk. Interment of Wally and Ellen's urn took place at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Veterans Plot. Wally is survived by his sons Rick (Linda) and Ian (Marilyn); his daughters Joanne (Marshall) Smith, Nancy (Sam) Siwy, Janice Shirley and Barbara Shirley; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Ellen on October 28, 2011 and numerous other family members. Wally was born in Swift Current on February 19, 1926. He received his formal education in Swift Current. In December of 1939, Wally joined the Royal Canadian Navy, serving on HMS Jamaica, HMS New Amsterdam and HMCS Ontario. Wally received his discharge in January of 1946 and returned to Swift Current where he married Ellen Aitken on April 3, 1946. He began work with Canada Post in 1946 and worked there for 38 years. Wally delivered the first letter for Canada Post door to door in Swift Current. Wally really enjoyed delivering mail and talking to the people on his route and later took a management position. In his spare time, Wally enjoyed farming with Lionel Kruse, travelling with Ellen around the world and spending time with her and their friends in Tucson, Az. He was also very passionate about garage sales. Wally was very generous and thoughtful of others. He moved to Prairie Pioneers Independent Living in 2010 and thoroughly enjoyed being there. He was very proud to live his life in this area and thought of his family and friends needs before his own. Wally will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
