TRENTON – Rev. John Patterson, CD, BA, BTh, age 71, passed away on May 25, 2015 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, NS.
Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, he was the son of the late David and Wilhelmina Patterson.
John served in the Canadian Armed Forces (Navy) from 1962-1975. He was ordained into the United Church ministry in 1978. Ministry was everything to John. John retired from ministry in 2000 and settled in Trenton. John enjoyed being a member of First United Church, Trenton, serving on boards and committees of the church. He especially enjoyed the time spent with the Monday morning Time Out group.
John served as a Past Grand Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star of NS and PEI. He was a Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of PEI and member of Albion Masonic Lodge No. 5.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years Diane (Fraser); son, Jim; daughter, Krista (Mike Cullymore); grandchildren, Jonathan (Tiffany Caines) and Dakota; great-grandchildren, Hailey and Brooklynn; sister, Alice (Joe) Grilli, and their family: Evelina, David, Louis and John; sisters-in-law, Margie (Wallace) Allen, Hilary Fraser, and brother-in-law, Jim (Paulette) Fraser and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Rev. Bill Fraser.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation on Friday, May 29, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 73 High Street, Trenton, NS. The Order of the Eastern Star Funeral Service will be held at 1:45 p.m. on Saturday, May 30 followed by a service celebrating John’s life beginning at 2 p.m. at the First United Church Hall, with Rev. Wade Reppert officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery. Reception to follow.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the General Memorial Fund or Mission and Service Fund of First United Church or ESTARL.
