APRIL (GARSON), FREDA
Freda Lee April, born May 20, 1923 (Saint John, NB) passed away peacefully at her home in Toronto May 26, 2015.
Eldest daughter of Abram and Bertha Garson, Freda was predeceased by her parents, her devoted husband and eternal partner Lionel ("Lee") and her three sisters - Rose Tobin, Helen Karrel and Ethel Myers (all of Toronto).
Freda is survived by her loving family - daughter Lorie April (Toronto), son Michael (Halifax) daughter-in-law Lysa and grandchildren Allan and Samantha.
Freda attended public schools in Saint John, graduating from Saint John High School in 1940. Freda returned to her home city as Lee's bride after he received his honourable discharge from the RCAF following active flying service overseas (1939 through 1945). Freda and Lee both earned diplomas from Dalhousie University's School of Pharmacy in 1960 and
together they bought, owned and operated Robbins Drug Store in uptown Saint John until selling the thriving business to Shoppers Drug
Mart in 1971. Following a subsequent successful career together - owning, developing and operating a real estate portfolio, Freda and
Lee retired to Toronto in 1986 while continuing to host their family and many friends at their Browns Flat summer home on the St. John River
and as snowbirds at Longboat Key, Florida. Freda graduated with a BA from Queen's University in 1944 and was a passionate life long learner and student of politics, art history, fine arts and interior design - enrolling in and attending classes at UNBSJ, University of Toronto, Ryerson, George Brown College and the Canadian Opera Company until her 86th year. Those who knew Freda appreciated her keen intelligence and terrific sense of humour, her discerning eye for art and ear for music.
Funeral service will be held Friday, May 29 1:00pm at Benjamin's Park Memorial Chapel, 2401 Steeles Avenue West, Toronto. Burial Sunday, May 31, Shaarei Zedek Cemetery, Saint John at 11:00 am.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
