It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Anne (MacMillan) MacDonald on May 30, 2015 at the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital.
Born in Inverness on September 12, 1919 to James and Sarah (MacIsaac) MacMillan, Anne was predeceased by her first husband John Shryock. Anne later married John “Brother” MacDonald of New Glasgow who passed in 2004. She was also predeceased by her sisters Sadie MacMillan, Mary (Millie) MacDonald, Sr. Christina MacMillan, Florence Lamb, brothers Danny, Archie (Doc), Coady and nephew Brian MacMillan
As a young woman, Anne was a popular accompanist for various fiddlers at dances throughout Inverness County.
In 1941 Anne graduated from St. F.X. University with a B.Sc. in Home Economics. She went on to study at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto and practiced as a dietitian at Sunnybrook Hospital, Toronto. Anne attained the position of dietitian at Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center, Chicago, IL. It was from here that she was invited to join the team of a groundbreaking, long-term study of coronary heart disease. The Chicago Western Electric Company Study, and the data collected there, contributed to the first information co-relating coronary heart disease with nutrition and exercise.
Anne received a Master's in Public Health from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI and went on to teach at that university until her retirement. She returned to Nova Scotia where she lived happily for a number of years in New Glasgow and Inverness.
She is survived by her sister Patsy LeFort, Inverness, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held at Stella Maris Church on Thursday, June 4th at 11 a.m. with visitation in the church prior to Mass. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will take place at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, New Glasgow at a later date.
The family would like to thank Dr. Lok and staff of the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital and at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. We would also like to express our appreciation to the staff of the Inverary Manor for the care given to Anne.
Donations in memory of Anne may be made to the Stella Maris Cemetery Fund or the Inverary Manor.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Inverness Funeral Home.
