Lloyd David Rintoul, age 78, a high-energy, athletic father, grandfather and brother, passed away on Thursday, May 28, 2015, at Alderwood Nursing Home in Baddeck.
Born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. on Feb. 10, 1937, Lloyd was the son of Captain John Boyd and Bertha Rintoul. Lloyd had many friends and enjoyed life - he was a good man.
In his early years, Lloyd was an avid outdoorsmen and hockey player. Lloyd graduated from Michigan Tech with a degree in engineering. Lloyd began his career at Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. Work was a priority for Lloyd and he excelled in the business world. Lloyd worked at a number of large multi-national companies in senior executive positions. Lloyd traveled around the world for work. Work defined him. He specialized in manufacturing and operations. Some of the companies he worked for included Rockwell International, EMCO Wheaton, and R.L. Crain. While at Rockwell International, Lloyd was proud to be a part of the team that developed the arm for the space shuttle. He also served as Dean of Business at Humber College.
In later years, Lloyd and his wife Rodina enjoyed winters in Miami and summers in Cape Breton. Lloyd always enjoyed biking and roller blading any place he visited.
Lloyd was also a fun Grampa. He loved his five grandchildren and spent a lot of time with each of them. Drake had a special bond with Grampa and is following in Grampa’s footsteps by becoming a hockey player, reading Tom Clancy and aspiring to be an engineer. Gabrielle loved hearing all the stories of our many dogs and hamsters that we had growing up.
Sydney and Emily loved playing games with Grampa. The girls especially enjoyed going for walks with Grampa and looking for bunnies. Darcy loved visiting Grampa at Alderwood and driving his cars on Grampa’s lap.
Lloyd is survived by his two daughters, Dr. Natalie Rintoul (Dr. Gordon Morewood), Philadelphia, PA, Liana Rintoul (Dr. Warren Wilkes), Sydney, N.S.; his five grandchildren, Drake (15) and Gabrielle (12) Morewood, Philadelphia and Sydney (11), Emily (9) and Darcy (4) Wilkes of Sydney, N.S.; his sister, Pat Jensen, Scarborough, Ont. and his sister-in-law, Maurita Rintoul, Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.
Lloyd was predeceased by his wife, Rodina; his mother, Bertha; his father, Captain John Boyd and his brother, Albert Rintoul.
Special thanks to Dr. Milligan and his staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital who rescued our Dad and gave him a new life with dignity and respect. We will be forever grateful for your compassion in treating our Dad. Thank you for recognizing his beautiful mind and indulging his passion for business. You provided us with the opportunity to enjoy extended time with him.
Finally, a special thank you to Alderwood for the meticulous care you provided to our Dad. Each and every Alderwood staff member truly exceeded Alderwood’s mission and value statement by providing our Dad with loving care and friendship and by optimizing his quality of life in every regard.
Because of Dad, we will always cry when we hear Neil Diamond, think of him when we see a canoe, love hockey, work hard, laugh when we hear the word “Timberdoodle” and feel like we should exercise every morning at 5 a.m.
