Richard "Dick" MacLean

At the Kings County Memorial Hospital, with family by his side, with great sadness the family announces the passing of Richard "Dick" MacLean, age 87, of Victoria Cross, devoted husband of 61 years to Mary (Baker) MacLean, occurred on Thursday, June 4, 2015.
Born in Sergent, Colorado, U.S.A., he was the son of the late Sidney and Sybil (Poole) MacLean.
Dick is survived by his loving children, Doug (Kim) MacLean and John (Rhonda) MacLean; beloved grandchildren, Jennifer, Heather, Brett, Morgan, and Cassie; cherished great-grandchildren, Finn and Levi Mullally; sisters, Colleen Lewis (Freetown, P.E.I.) and Katherine O'Leary (Dartmouth, N.S.); brother, Kent (Helena) MacLean (Lunenburg, N.S.). He was predeceased by his brothers-in-law, Edwin Lewis and John O'Leary.
Dick was always active in his community and had a great passion for business and hockey. Dick began his career at the Poole & Thompson Warehouse but after a few years his entrepreneurial spirit took over and in 1953 he went into business for himself making concrete blocks. From these humble beginnings he built MacLean's Ready Mix Concrete - a successful Kings County concrete and trucking business that he operated with his family by his side for close to 60 years. He was an active hockey player, coach and organizer throughout his life including sitting on the Community Welfare League which was responsible for building Iceland Arena, and later in life served as the Honorary Chairman of the Montague Wellness Centre Building Committee. He also served on the Montague Fire Department, Junior Board of Trade, Montague Museum Committee, and was Chairman of Kings County Memorial Hospital and an active member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. In 2008, Dick was honoured to be inducted into the P.E.I. Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame. Dick was also a great animal lover and always had a german shepherd by his side.
He will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to have known him.
