It is with great sadness that the family of Tommy Murphy announce his passing at Western Memorial Hospital's Long Term Care facility on Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at the age of 94. Leaving to mourn his wife of 71 years, Vera, his son T. Gerald (Gerry) Murphy (Noreen), his daughters Maureen Murphy (Reg Barry) and Kathleen Murphy-House (Dominic House), his sister, Margaret (Jimmy McGoldrick), his grandchildren Stephen Murphy (Krista Fudge), Sean Murphy (Martina Delaney), Janice Murphy (Dennis Shelley), Andrew House, Gregory House (Meaghan), and Jennifer Barry, greatgrandchildren Leah, Megan, Madeline, Aislin, Isabella, and William Thomas. Tommy was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1920 and was pre-deceased by his parents, Margaret and Tommy and by his sister, Helen. He served in the British Navy and met his wife during the war in Sydney, Nova Scotia where they later married. When the war ended, they lived in Glasgow for two years and then moved to Corner Brook in 1948. Tommy was an electrician in the paper mill but was more well-known in Corner Brook as a musician, a singer and a music teacher. There are many children and adults in Corner Brook who have fond memories of being taught by Tommy. In 2010, he received the Unsung Hero award from Music NL. Tommy was a long-time member of the church choir at the Cathedral and later at All Hallows. He was also a long-standing member of the Scottish Heritage Society. Friends may visit at Fillatre's Funeral Home, St. Mark's Avenue on Thursday from 2-4 pm and from 7-9 pm. The funeral service will take place on Friday, June 19, 2015 at 11:30 am from All Hallows Church, Humber Road with Father Ambrose Hynes officiating with internment to follow at Mount Patricia Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, flowers are graciously accepted or donations may be made to Corner Brook Long Term Care or All Hallows Catholic Church.
