Walter leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his wife, Marina Joyce (nee Bixby); daughter, Deborah (Gregor) Mawhinney; grandchildren, Tiffany (Elliott Williams); Aaron, Rebecca and Jonathan; great-grandchildren, Liam Mawhinney, Aurora Williams, Cabot Williams; siblings. Raymond (Elaine) Critchley, Joan (Derrick) Madder and George (Alma )Critchley. Walter is predeceased by his parents Edwin and Mary Critchley; sister Louise Pollard. Walter graduated from Grand Falls Academy in 1949 and joined the Canadian Army. After leaving the Army he continued his education at the Trade School in St. John's as a Mechanical Machinist. He was employed by the A.N.D. Company which was the fore runner of Abitibi Price. He retired in 1990 holding the position as Superintendent. Walter was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 12 since 1953, where he served on the executive for 12 years, as president from 1986-1989; he served four years on the Provincial Command; 2nd and 1st Vice President; President Provincial Command 1991-1993; In the Labour Movement he was President of the Machinist Union Local 1906, President of the Newfoundland & Labrador Federation of Labor for four terms; he served for nine years on the Central Newfoundland Hospital Board and three years as Board Chairman; Walter was the Deputy Mayor of the former Town of Windsor; he was a faithful member of the Memorial United Church where he was Chairman of the Finance Committee and Counting Committee. He was also a Provincial Justice of The Peace. Over his lifetime Walter received many awards some of which were: Governors' General Commemorative Medal on 125the Anniversary of Confederation of Canada; Meritorious Service Medal Royal Canadian Legion; Governor's General Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal for Significant Contribution to Fellow Citizens and Community; The Newfoundland Labrador Federation of Labour Certificate of Appreciation for Executive Contribution and Service. Walter also had several hobbies some of which included hunting, fishing, stamp collecting; he was an avid reader, thoroughly enjoyed politics, travel and golf. The public visitation took place Monday, June 15, 2015 at 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm from Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, Grand Falls-Windsor, NL. The funeral service took place Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at 11 am from Memorial United Church, Grand Falls Windsor, NL with Rev. Kim Waite officiating. The interment will be at a later date. As expressions of sympathy donations in his memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Alzheimer's Society. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
