Born In: Woodside

Passed on: June 20th, 2015

Valerie B. MacGowan – of Kentville, passed away on June 20, 2015 at the age of 84. Born in Woodside, Kings County, she was the youngest daughter of the late Richard and Laura (Illsley) Holt. She was a graduate of Mack Business College in Kentville and, until her marriage to Carl MacGowan, worked at the T. Eaton Co. Ltd. in Moncton, New Brunswick. She was a member of Trinity United Church in Canning and an active member of their UCW. She is survived by her children, Jim, Dartmouth; Nancy (Rob) Naylor, Blind Bay; Karen (John) Kennedy, Thorburn; four grandchildren, Chris, Laura, Ryan and Carolyn; three great-grandchildren, Mack, Ellie and Cade. She is also survived by her brother, Darrell; sisters, Marion (Lyons) and Shirley (Butler); numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband after 56 years of marriage; her siblings, Eric, Jean (Fisher), Levi, Isabelle (Murphy), Mac and Stanley. Married life in the Armed Forces allowed her to visit many European countries and to experience other Canadian provinces, but especially enabled the formation of lifelong friendships with other Forces families. Her sense of humour, well-honed from childhood, engaged everyone she met. She was a proud cook and baker. She loved bowling, a lively card party, and playing Scrabble and crokinole. When Bluebloods was on, we knew where to find her. We will learn to laugh again, but will miss sharing a laugh with you, Mom. Thank you for the richness of life you gave us. A very special thank you to friends and staff at Kings Riverside Court, Kentville, Careforce and Ivey’s Terrace, Trenton. Thanks as well to Dr. Farrell and the wonderful staff at the Palliative Care Unit at the Aberdeen Hospital. Donations to the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville or the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow would be appreciated. Cremation has taken place. There was no visitation, by request. A service was held on Friday, June 26, 2015 followed by interment in the Jaw Bone Corner Cemetery, Canard. Arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. On-line condolences and inquiries may be directed to www.whitefamilyfuneralhome.com.
