Dorothy Rose Schafer, our mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend passed away peacefully on June 16, 2015 at Cypress House in Swift Current.
Dorothy was born February 28, 1921 to August and Rosa Mader in Regina, Saskatchewan. The family moved to the Senate area where Dorothy grew up and married Adam Schafer on August 8th 1939. Over a period of time the couple welcomed four children into their family; Jim, Pat, Allan and Blaine.
Life in Senate was short on amenities like running water and electricity, but Dorothy’s resourcefulness saw the family through. She loved homemaking, spending time with family friends, summer holidays and above all, family picnics in the Cypress Hills.
After retiring to Maple Creek, Dorothy enjoyed an active social life, visiting with her numerous friends, playing card games at the Senior Citizen’s Center and being involved in her church. Travel was another one of her passions and she visited numerous places including Germany, Greenland, Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, the Bahamas, Alaska and all over Canada.
Family was everything to Dorothy. She was incredibly proud of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and keeping track of them was one of her favorite past times.
Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Adam, her oldest son, Jim, parents August & Rosa Mader, siblings Fritz and Werner Mader, grandson Drew Wagner and friend Jake Roth. She is survived by her daughter-in-law Barbara Schafer; children Pat (John) Pankratz, Allan (Terry) Schafer, Blaine (Shelley) Schafer; grandchildren Stephanie (Patrick) Ballard, Beverly (Darren) Kruger, Kevin (Shari) Schafer, Katie (Jeff) Kalinocha, Ivan (Fedra) Pankratz, Bruce (Jaime) Friesen-Pankratz, Sonia (Dion) Wieler, Celina (Ben) Jimenez, Jodi Thorimbert, Jerrod (Kelly) Schafer, Jennifer (Shaun Morris) Schafer, Travis (Holly) Schafer, Shawn Schafer, and Brett (Nikki) Wagner; and Great Grandchildren Tarryn, Kaitlyn & Julia Ballard, Emily Kruger, Kaleb, Chayse & Riley Schafer, Hunter & Xander Kalinocha, Lea & Luke Pankratz, Zam, Hizee and Ziko Friesen-Pankratz, Lindsay & Megan Wieler, Suzanne & Hans Jimenez, Bailey & Brayden McKenna, Abbi-Gail Thorimbert, Jax Kruse, Casie, Carsen & Darby Schafer, Emery Morris, Shelby, Rylan & Chloe Schafer, Kyler Schafer, Georgia & Amelia Wagner.
Interment took place on Saturday, June 13, 2015 in the Maple Creek Cemetery beside her beloved Adam, joining him again after 38 years.
