Passed on: June 25th, 2015

It is with great sadness that we the family of the late Charles Frederick 'Fred' Ryan, 77, announce his passing on June 25, 2015, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Dad was born and raised in Ashby but for the last 51 years resided in Dutch Brook.
He was the son of the late Fred and Helen (McCormack) Ryan.
He was predeceased by his brother Jimmy.
He is survived by his best friend and wife of 53 years, Renee (Mills); his children, Tim (Lynn Reginato), Cathy (Neil Walker), Trevor, Kim (Robert Walsh), Kenny (Robyn Postlethwaite). He was the proud grandfather of nine grandchildren who he loved very much, Kristen (Richard Burns) and Steven Walker, Kyle Petrie, Douglas MacLean, Talia and Braden Ryan, Julia Lahey, Emma and Josh Walsh and one great-grandchild Cameron MacMillan. In addition, he is survived by his brother Doug (Louise Corbett) and the extended Mills family.
He was employed at Sydney Steel Corporation for forty years until his retirement in 1997. He was an avid athlete throughout his life, who enjoyed hockey, skating, fishing, softball, horseshoes, and more recently, darts and cards at the Mira Seniors and Pensioners Centre, where he was a member. Most of all, he took pleasure in the company of his friends and family and loved being able to watch his grandchildren’s sporting events throughout the years. He was a quiet, humble, private man who never complained throughout his courageous battle with cancer.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 28, 2015, at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Memorial service will be celebrated Monday, June 29, 2015 at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Lydia MacKinnon officiating. Interment to follow at Riverview Cemetery, Marion Bridge.
Donations may be made to the St. Columba Presbyterian Church, Marion Bridge or Riverview Cemetery Fund.
May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rain fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.
