REDHEAD, Verna Ilene
August 17, 1925 – June 29, 2015
With heavy hearts, the family of Verna Ilene Redhead (Adams) announces her passing on June 29, 2015 in Campbell River, B.C. at the age of 89 years. She leaves her brother, Ernest Adams; her children, Pat Redhead, Karen Redhead, Barbara Krack (Calvin), Bob Redhead (Sandy), Gordon Redhead (Laura); as well as ten grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, Chestley Charles Adams and Cora Viola Adams (Lorensen); her husband, Robert Fredrick (Fred) Redhead; and her son, Ronald Ray Redhead.
Even as a little girl growing up in Prince Albert, SK, Verna Ilene wanted a large family. She married Fred Redhead in September 1945 when he returned from fighting in WWII and they had six children. Fred worked for the Beaver Lumber Company, Co-op Lumber, and the Veterans’ Land Act and as a result the family lived in several places in Saskatchewan including Nipawin, Eston, White Bear, Hodgeville, St. Walburg, Melville, Wakaw and Prince Albert. They also lived in Sydney, Nova Scotia for a few years. Fred died in 1996 and, in 2007, Verna moved to B.C. with her daughters, Pat and Barbara.
After the children had grown, Verna was the manager of the Prince Albert Historical Museum from 1980 – 1987. She was a lifetime member of the Rupert’s Land Society and served on museum boards at the city, provincial and national levels. In 1988, she received an Honorary Life Membership from the Saskatchewan Museum Association. She was also a board member for the Victoria Union Hospital, the Prince Albert Co-op, the P.A. Embroiders Guild, the P.A. Genealogy Society, and the Salvation Army. In 1995, Verna and two cousins, June Kelly and Jackie Hobbs, collaborated to produce a genealogy of “The Descendants of George Adams and Ann Heywood”. Verna worked as a volunteer in the Archives of the Synod Office of The Anglican Diocese of Saskatchewan for about ten years. In 2002, they honoured her with the Order of Saskatchewan and in 2007, they named the archives, “The Verna Redhead Room”.
Thanks to the staff at Ironwood Place, New Horizons and the Campbell River Hospital who cared for Verna with respect and affection. The family will take her cremated remains to Saskatchewan in the near future and bury her in St. Paul’s Lindsay Cemetery south of Prince Albert, where many of her ancestors are also buried.
