HALLIDAY, Carl Robert
We are sad to announce that Carl passed away suddenly in the early hours of
July 6, 2015, after a brief illness. He was born in Amherst on May 5, 1929, to
Edward and Joanna (Kelligrew) Halliday. He is survived by his loving wife
Geraldine (Gerry Lynds/Langille) and his loyal four-legged park buddy, Peggy.
Also surviving are sons Carl Jr. (Cheryl), Vancouver, BC, and David (Marion),
Riverton, Pictou Co., as well as “daddy's little girl”, Linda Mason (Bruce Cox),
Upper Stewiacke, and step-daughter Shauna (Kevin) Turner, Truro. As Bampy, he
leaves many happy memories for his grandchildren: C.R. and Jessi Halliday;
Craig, Christine, Maren, and Kate Halliday; Michelle, Scott, Allison, and Adam
Mason. Great-grandchildren Zeniyah Thompson and Sophia Halliday will be told
the stories of how he loved to make us laugh and of the love he had for his
family. Carl will be dearly missed by his brother Jim and wife Eva, Trenton, and
by his special niece Judy Bradbury, New Glasgow, as well as several nieces and
nephews that will have many fond memories of Uncle Carl. His last surviving
uncle, John and wife Pauline Kelligrew of Amherst held a special place in Carl's
heart. He was predeceased by his sister Pauline, brothers Douglas and Russell,
and his first wife Ethel (Langille).
Although he suffered from sea sickness, Carl spent many years on ships, he
worked on tug boats and travelled the oceans while in the Merchant Navy and the
Canadian Coast Guard where he earned the nickname “Doc Halliday” from his
cohorts...oops, co-workers! He was proud of his service and often told stories of
the places he visited, the people he met, and the friendships he made. The ocean
always had a place in his heart whether he was fishing, camping, or teaching his
kids to swim. As a truck driver for many years, Carl worked for Vet's Transfer in
New Glasgow and Sydney as well as Bagnell's Laundry in Truro. He was a
contractor for Canada Post and delivered the mail to the rural post offices
between Truro and Amherst for several years before becoming the owneroperator
of what was then called East Prince Texaco. Carl was a good friend and
neighbour to his Young Street community where his willingness and expertise at
fixing just about anything will be missed. He loved playing the spoons to his
Newfie music - or any other tune that got his foot tapping!
There will be no visitation or service at Carl's request. As was his generous way,
he has donated his body to DAL Medical for study and research. A celebration of
his life will be held at a later date. Carl was a 35-year member of the Legion so if
desired, donations can be made in his memory to Royal Canandian Legion
Br. #26, PO Box 635, Truro, NS B2N 5E5 or to a charity of choice.
