Agnes (Rennie) McPhee

Born In: Reserve Mines

Passed on: July 7th, 2015

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Agnes Logie McPhee of Grand Lake Road on Tuesday July 7, 2015.
Agnes was born and raised in Reserve Mines, to David and Elizabeth (Boutilier) Rennie. She is survived by her three boys, Stan, Mickey (Simone Saule) and John (Patricia Shaw); by her eight beloved grandchildren, Neil, Stephanie, Kyle, Liam, Sean, Mary, Jonah, and Michael; by her sister, Elizabeth and by her many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Stan; her brothers, David, George and Joseph and her stepfather, Pat Carrigan.
Agnes graduated from the Nova Scotia Provincial Normal College in 1949 with her teacher’s license. She then moved to Ontario where she took a position in a bank. In Ontario, Agnes married Stan, also of Reserve Mines. Back in Cape Breton, while raising their three boys and teaching elementary school, Agnes took evening and summer courses to upgrade her teaching license. Her strong work ethic is admired across generations. Agnes spent 25 years instilling a love of reading in her students, many of whom considered her to be their best teacher ever.
Agnes enjoyed an extremely active retirement with Stan. From babysitting to home improvement, Agnes had a great impact on her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed walking with her friends and participating in line dancing and exercise classes. She developed a passion for golf that began in her forties and lasted the rest of her life. As her many friends will tell you, she also loved a good card game and could become quite competitive. Games of Auction at the McPhee household are legendary.
Agnes was a woman of strong faith and taught catechism at St. Augustine’s parish. The love and compassion in Agnes’ heart cannot be overstated. She always had two hands for those who needed one. She could often be found volunteering at a good cause or event. Her generous soul improved the lives of those around her.
More than anything, Agnes loved her family. She was fiercely proud of her three boys, and doted on her eight grandchildren. We consider ourselves blessed to have her as our mother and grandmother.
A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday July 11th, at St. Joseph’s Church in Reserve Mines, officiated by Fr. Boone. The mass will be followed by a reception. There will be no visitation.
Memorial donations may be made to An Cala Palliative Care.
Arrangements are under the care and guidance of Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St.
